The most tranquil time of the year
Advent is a time for traditional celebration in the towns in the Achensee region. The most contemplative time of the year is celebrated tranquilly and is full of ambiance. Events, such as “Bergweihnacht” in the Sixenhof invite you to take stock for a while, time to relax and reflect – no hint of stress and hustle and bustle.
There is a very special magical aura when in Steinberg am Rofan the entire village becomes an Advent calendar and a different house is lit up every day.
At the Sixenhof in Achenkirch at the Tyrolean Mountain Christmas a living crib with various animals and life-size figures doesn’t just make children’s eyes sparkle.
And when on the first Saturday in Advent at the little Advent market in Pertisau the aroma of freshly baked chestnuts and spicy punch lies in the air, you get the feeling that Advent is probably the loveliest time of the year. The women in Pertisau makes Christmas gifts, Advent wreathes and biscuits weeks beforehand and these are then sold at the stands.
The shipping company Achenseeschiffahrt invites you to enjoy the Seeweihnacht (Lake Christmas) on the Achensee. In Pertisau the ship will set sail on the first Saturday in Advent, and will call first of all at one of a total of four romantically illuminated jetties, on which woodwind players will play Advent tunes. Each weekend the steamer ‘Stadt Innsbruck’ will set sail for another jetty and upon its arrival the Christmas star will beam brightly. On the deck you get to enjoy meandering around the little Christmas market which is alluring thanks to the many festive treats, handcrafts and hot mulled wine on offer, as you enjoy the view to the wintry Achensee.
At the Museumsweihnacht, which is held every year in Maurach on 8th December, stalls with mulled wine and local tasty treats are there for you to enjoy. This unique Christmas festival is held on 8th December every year during Advent.
Every year on 5th December things get hellish throughout Tyrol. After all, this is a time for Perchten and Krampuses, who reveal their abominable figures at processions, accompanying Santa Claus to serve as a warning to bad children.
